How Do Turnkey Racing Simulators Work?
Share
You probably clicked on this article because you are interested in Turnkey Racing Simulators. And that's great!
Or, maybe you're curious on how the whole "Turnkey Racing Simulator" thing works.
Over the previous year, there have been quite a few companies that've popped up in the Turnkey Racing Simulator space (including us, I'll be honest). However, there hasn't been a standard process in place for how this service/product works.
What's Included?
This is our most frequently asked question when it comes to Turnkey Racing Simulators, "what's included?" And to that, the answer varies from company to company. However, I'll tell you what we do at Boundless Racing.
Wheelbase
One of the key parts of a simulator. All of our systems will include a direct drive wheelbase (the type depends on the system level). Direct Drive is a high-end force feedback technology that directly connects the steering wheel to the motor. This provides a much more immersive and realistic driving experience. It offers precise, detailed feedback, allowing drivers to feel every aspect of the car's behavior and the track's surface.
Steering Wheel
Of course, you need a steering wheel! We typically use a round steering wheel (13 inches with a button plate) as our standard for builds. This way, it is as versatile as possible. However, the majority of our clients opt for an additional "formula-style" wheel and other wheels if desired.
3 Pedal Sets
Maybe you've heard the term "drive with your feet." Now, this isn't literal. However, the best drivers in the world utilize as smooth steering input as possible and use their pedals to make subtle corrections. Therefore, the pedals are essential. Our standard is a "load-cell" brake system. However, some clients will opt for "hydraulic" (real-life) style pedals or "active-pedal" systems as well.
Seat + Chassis
Start with the foundation. Your chassis is the backbone of your rig, so don't cut corners here. While there are plenty of solid options on the market, flex is a critical factor—especially if you plan to upgrade to a motion setup later. Added motion means added weight, often in directions the frame wasn't originally built to handle. That's why we recommend going with an extruded aluminum chassis. Not only is it incredibly rigid and durable, but its slotted design also provides flexibility to mount and reposition peripherals with ease.
The seat is equally as important. This is where you'll be at the helm of your rig and want something comfortable and sturdy. We utilize seats from popular brands such as Recaro and Sabelt, including various seat sliders and brackets. However, we also have options in seats that offer a "bucket-seat" experience but are more cost-effective. We'll even option special seats that have internal cooling and haptics.
Monitor
Whether you're using your simulator in an apartment or a large garage, we have a monitor option that's right for your use case, from a single 49" ultrawide or triple 77" OLED TVs. The monitor is your view into the virtual world. We offer reliable, proven sim racing monitors, along with adjustments, to make your "field of view" as immersive and accurate as possible.
Monitor Stand
The monitor stand is where your monitors, PC's, and other accessories will be. This is another part of your foundation as it holds half of your systems setup. For all monitor stands, regardless of configuration, we utilize standalone aluminum extrusion stands.
Sound System
For all systems, we include a wireless headset + sound bar for your listening pleasure.
Games + Software
All of our systems include a year of iRacing, Assetto Corsa, and Automobilista 2 as starter games. We also include all necessary sim racing software along with Teamviewer and Discord.
PC
All of our systems include the most up-to-date PC's. We opt for the most recent, top-of-line Intel + AMD CPUs, DDR5 RAM, the fastest SSDs, and 50-series Graphics Cards.
Delivery + Installation
Every system includes delivery. Whether you're local in Atlanta or in Alaska, we'll provide delivery and installation. This way, you don't have to question anything, and you'll be ready to race by simply pushing a button.
Added Options
We also have options that can be added to your system.
Upgrades
For any system (Rookie, Grassroots, Fusion, Legacy, etc.), we can interchange and upgrade or downgrade parts from other system configurations.
Powder Coated Cockpits
For any system, if the cockpit/chassis is made of aluminum extrusion, we can powder coat it to any color you'd like, along with any graphics you'd like to add.
Cockpit Accessories
Keyboard trays, cup holders, headset hooks, and more can be added to your system.
Shifter + Handbrake
If you want to get that connected feel or experience some intense skids or rally racing, we can add a shifter and handbrake! We have different levels of shifters and handbrakes, as the importance of these items is different from person to person. This is also named "Drift Add-On" for our systems.
Surround Sound
Surround sound can be a fantastic option if you want to elevate your audio experience and achieve a more immersive sound from your system.
Motion System
Some of our clients add on a motion system! The standard for a motion system is 3 Degrees of Freedom (DOF; Roll, Pitch & Heave) from a D-Box Motion System. However, we do offer systems from popular brands such as PT Actuator along with Qubic System. For Qubic System, we even provide their V20 (4 DOF) and S25 (6 DOF) systems.
Motion Platform
For traction loss and sway, we can also add a motion platform. Our standard platform is the Advanced Traction Loss Platform from ASR, combined with the D-Box. However, we also offer the Qubic System CH-2, as well as the complete PT-Actuator Legend and Dragon Setup.
Our Process
Let's review our simplified three-step process for purchasing a turnkey racing simulator from Boundless Racing.
Consultation
First things first, we want to understand what you would like to purchase. The "big "three" questions are:
- How much space do you have (including access to where you want to put this)?
-
What type of car do you want to drive (we can create motorsport-specific systems)?
- This also determines if you wish to have a shifter/brake, clutch, etc.
-
What's your budget?
- It's obvious, but we try to work around everyone's budget (higher budgets will also have motion).
This way, we can be the "doctors" of sim racing and "diagnose" you with a cure... aka, a turnkey simulator.
From there, we'll send you a pricing breakdown and general info on our configured simulators.
Execution
After we figure out the simulator and receive payment (which can be a deposit or financed), we proceed with building the simulator.
The first thing we'll do, of course, is order all the parts. PCs, monitor(s), and all sim gear will be ordered, sorted, and appointed to your build. Of course, if there are any delays in parts, we'll communicate that to the driver and begin the build, working around the missing parts.
From there, we'll use science and mathematics to craft your simulator setup.
Testing
Once the simulator is built, it's time to test it.
Here, we thoroughly test all hardware and software. We apply our studied ergonomics and make your simulator comfortable (in a base setup). We also utilize all of our tested wheels and require motion settings to enable you to use your simulator fully.
We also ensure that all hardware is working. Whether it's simulator hardware, monitors, or even the PCs, things can break. Therefore, if anything is unfortunately broken, we'll fix or replace it before delivery. And that brings us to our final step.
Installation
Once everything is ready according to our timeline, it's time to ship your simulator to your home, business, or any other designated location.
We ship all of our simulators in large wooden crates. Once the crate arrives to your home, we'll be at your location within 1-2 days. From there, our team of sim racing professionals will unpack your crate and begin installing your system into your simulator location.
During installation, we'll make any necessary adjustments to make the simulator perfect for you. This includes steering wheel positioning, seating positioning, pedal positioning, and more.
From there, we'll spend about 2-3 hours thoroughly explaining the simulator and the "how-to" to ensure smooth operation.
After that, we're done! However, if you ever need assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.
Conclusion
Whether you're a starting racer or a veteran racer at Boundless Racing, we've got you! Please don't hesitate to ask us any questions you may have, connect with our community, and have fun. At the end of the day, no matter how competitive you are, if you aren't enjoying the journey, you aren't doing it right.
